The fourth section (Chapters 9–12) offers an international focus, with attention paid to particular national contexts and international student experiences. The third section (Chapters 6–8) addresses professional careers, with specific consideration for doctoral students and the professoriate. The second section (Chapters 3–5) addresses new perspectives on student socialization, with contributions that situate the experiences and agency of specific populations of students as central to the socialization process. First, the editors (Chapter 1) open with an introduction and Weidman (Chapter 2) gives the reader a look in the rearview mirror of socialization theorizing, tracing his long-standing career. ![]() Moving into a new era of socialization inquiry, this edited volume simultaneously illustrates the flexible uses of socialization as a theoretical frame for higher education research and highlights the necessity to revise models that elide history and identity in explicating socialization processes. The invited authors reflect upon, implement, challenge, revise, and reimagine tenets from the array of socialization frameworks offered by Weidman and others (e.g., Gardner & Mendoza, 2010) over many decades. In the opening of Socialization in Higher Education and the Early Career: Theory, Research and Application, John Weidman and Linda DeAngelo situate their edited volume as a celebration of student socialization work.
